Another way of synchronizing the exhaust is the automatic exhaust function of the DSD, which generates detonation in proportion to the throttle setting. For locomotives that are difficult to install mechanical cams, such as N type and smaller HO type locomotives, this method is recommended. When used with a programmable speed curve, it is difficult to distinguish between automatic exhaust and exhaust cams except for the slowest speed.
