Therefore, it is very important to install the DSDs where they can dissipate the most heat. Avoid placing DSDs near heat sources such as motors or lamps. You also need to decide how to synchronize the exhaust. DSD provides two synchronization modes. The first method is to use a mechanical cam, which works by opening and closing the switch contacts with the locomotive wheels or axles.

    Drive wheel inner surface contact

    The exhaust cam switch should preferably be installed in contact with the inner surface of the drive wheel. This will provide the most accurate synchronization, even when the locomotive accelerates too fast, resulting in wheel slip effect! In an emergency, the exhaust cam can be used with the flexible axle, although the synchronization effect is not accurate, unless the flexible axle diameter is an accurate multiple of the locomotive driver's diameter. Another way of synchronizing the exhaust is the automatic exhaust function of the DSD, which generates detonation in proportion to the throttle setting. For locomotives that are difficult to install mechanical cams, such as N type and smaller HO type locomotives, this method is recommended. When used with a programmable speed curve, it is difficult to distinguish between automatic exhaust and exhaust cams except for the slowest speed. Next, you need to consider which light effects will be used. The DSD provides four auxiliary function outputs that can be used to control micro lamps or LEDs.
